Paula Jones filed Clinton for sexual harassment on May 6, 1994, two days before the three-year statute of limitations expired, and claimed $750,000 in damages.
Jones alleged that Clinton sexually assaulted her while governor of Arkansas and then defamed her when she went public with her allegations.
Clinton’s lawyers submitted a request to dismiss Jones’ lawsuit in August, citing presidential immunity.
Similarly, Jones filed an appeal and won the right to a Supreme Court trial in 1996. However, Clinton then requested that the trial be postponed until after he had left office.
Clinton was granted a respite due to the decision’s timing, which coincided with the November 1996 presidential election.
The case was subsequently sent to the Senate, where he was acquitted after a 5-week trial.
On November 13, 1998, Clinton agreed to settle with Jones for $850,000, the total amount of her claim, without apology in return for her agreeing to abandon the case.
Furthermore, Judge Wright determined in March 1999 that Jones would get just $200,000 from the settlement, with the remainder going toward her legal fees.
