President Yoweri Museveni did not move straight into politics after schooling but was in the Uganda army, where he served as a General of the army. General Yoweri Museveni was very active and instrumental in the rebellions that removed from office notorious Ugandan leaders starting from the famous Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin through to the oppressive leader, Milton Obote. After the overthrow of President General Admiral Idi Amin in the Ugandan-Tanzania war and the former president, Milton Obote had returned to power through the 1980 election, President Museveni then General Museveni returned to Uganda to gather support among the Bantu-dominated south and south-west to form the famous military based political group, the Popular Resistance Army (PRA).From there his popularity grew without bounds and on 26 January, 1986, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni became president of the Republic of Uganda after leading a successful five-year liberation struggle.After victory, he formed a broad-based government that helped to unite the country’s political groups.
