Graham Norton was raised in Bandon, County Cork, where he struggled to express his sexuality adequately.
He also disclosed that he went to the US for a pen pal who could “show him the ropes.”
“I’ve never emerged. It didn’t seem reasonable,” he remarked. “There was no context for me to be gay in the early ’80s living in a small town in rural Ireland, so why tell anyone?”
I would have just been homosexual watching afternoon TV or riding my bike into town, he continued.
He felt it would have offended everyone without really serving any purpose to be gay in the highly significant boy meets boy scenario.
He decided to head over to where the boys were instead. He intended to fly to Los Angeles for the summer using his J1 visa that he received from the university.
Norton did not feel free to show his sexuality until he departed for America on his J1.
