1. Hurd is the first black man to be elected to Congress from Texas on the platform of the GOP.
2. Additionally, he is one of just seven black people to have been elected into the United States House of Representatives on the platform of the Republican Party.
3. One can boldly assert that Hurd was born to be a leader. While in college, he served as president of the student body in 1999.
4. The Congressman speaks Urdu fluently. For those who may not know, Urdu is the official language of Pakistan.
5. Hurd is a former CIA agent. He worked as a spy for the agency for nearly a decade and was stationed in places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan.
6. In 2017, Hurd and Beto O’Rourke a fellow Texan congressman (Democrat) embarked on a long road journey together, from Texas to Washington. This was so that they could vote on a bill pending in the house. They were forced to go by road after flights were canceled due to a heavy snowstorm. This collaborative effort earned them positive commendations. Additionally, they were awarded the 2018 prize for civility in public life by a U.S. university.
7. With regard to political views, Hurd is a moderate Republican. He is pro-life, pro-guns and supports repealing the Affordable Care Act (popularly known as Obamacare). He also supports increased U.S. military presence in Iraq and Syria and opposes the Iran nuclear deal.
