According to People, Johnnie and his brother Arthur lived in Virginia with their family.

Their parents raised them with proper care. His father, Arthur Ashe Sr., and his mother raise them in Virginia. 

Reportedly, his mother died when he was 18 months old. But Arthur was five years old. They were always together with close bonding.

When Johnnie was 17, he enlisted in the Marines. He served in the military in Vietnam for over 20 years.
