Andy Fletcher was the eldest son of Joy and John Fletcher. The family moved to Basildon from Nottingham when Fletcher was two years old.
He was a member of the local Boys’ Brigade since he was a child, primarily to play football.
He met future Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke in this Christian youth organization, and the two have both spoken about the local missionary work they did on behalf of the organization to convert non-believers in interviews.
On January 16, 1993, Fletcher married Gráinne Mullan, his long-time partner, and the couple had two children, Megan and Joe.
