Tom was born and raised by Albin Carl Wopat (father) 1919-1983 and Arlene Wopat [mother] 1920-1959. 

His father was a dairy farmer, and his mother was a housewife. Tom was raised with two brothers: Rick Wopat, and Dave Wopat, on a dairy farm by his parents. 

Wopat is married to his longtime girlfriend turned wife, Kristen S. Larvick, a filmmaker and audiovisual archivist by profession. 

Previously, Wopat was married to Kathy Wopat, and the former couple has five children. After that separation, he tied the knot to Vickie Allen in 1984 and divorced in 2000.
