Waugh was born in Ayer, Massachusetts, close north of Boston, to a family of five sons. Seth learned to play golf barefoot on the school’s nine-hole course before classes.
Waugh attended Amherst College, where he majored in English, which he enjoyed, and economics, which he thought he should pursue.
He took a position as a commodity trader for Continental Grain Co. in Minneapolis after receiving his dual degree in 1981, believing he’d try a business for a while before following in his father’s footsteps as a teacher/coach.
Jim Waugh, his father, was an English teacher at Groton School in Massachusetts and Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. Seth revealed that he taught in a Socratic manner, in which the students, often of themselves, became the teachers.
He considers his father to be his hero and role model because of the number of lives he has inspired and improved.
Seth’s mother was a well-known naturalist teacher specializing in bugs and birds.
