Robby receives his first electric guitar in 1982. He used to perform in various bands in college and also interned at a local radio station reading advertising for a local toilet maker. His professional career took off when he joined the rock band Beaumonts, later Monarch, in 1985. He became acquainted with guitarist John Rzeznik and percussionist George Tutuska. They named Takac the lead vocalist and bassist for their new band, “Sex Maggots.” The name of the band was changed to “Goo Goo Dolls” in 1986.
The track “Name” was their first commercial breakthrough. Since then, the Goo Goo Dolls have produced several albums and toured on a regular basis. They offered the studio to the public as GCR Audio in 2009. Takac and Brian Schulmeister of the dance music group Amungus formed Amungus in 2003. In Buffalo, New York, Robby founded his own record company, Good Charamel Records. Takac established the Music is Art Festival, a non-profit organization, in 2004. The organization investigates and reshapes the cultural, social, and educational influence of music on the community.
