A native of Davidson, North Carolina, Harrison is the son of Joanne Rhue and former U.S. Navy officer, Richard Benjamin Harrison, Jr.

Third among four children with two elder brothers; Sherry Joanne Harrison (died at age 6) and Joseph Kent Harrison.

His younger brother is Christopher K. Harrison.

When Harrison was eight, he suffered from epileptic seizures that confined him in bed during which he developed a love for books.

He was extensively influenced by a fictional character Tom D. Fitzgerald from the book “The Great Brain” who had the skill to juggle up profitable ideas.

Following, he dropped out of the San Diego Unified School District’s Taft Middle School when at grade ten.
