Charlize Theron was born as an only child to her parents, Gerda Jacoba Aletta Maritz and Charles Jacobus Theron (1947 – 1991). Her mother, Gerda, was a road constructionist. Her great-great-uncle was Danie Theron, the Second Boer War military leader.
When Charlize was 16, her Father, an alcoholic, threatened both Charlize and her mother, physically attacking her mother and firing a gun at them. Theron’s mother retrieved her handgun, shot back, and killed him.
The shooting was legally considered self-defense, and her mother faced no charges.
Charlize is from an Afrikaner family, and her ancestry includes Dutch, French, and German. Her first language is Afrikaans, and she also speaks fluent English.
The actress became an American citizen in 2007, holding dual citizenship in the U.S. and South Africa.
The famous actress was born in Benoni in Transvaal Province (now Gauteng Province), South Africa, and grew up near Johannesburg on her parent’s farm.
Born on August 7, 1975, Charlize is currently 47. She adopted two children: daughters named Jackson and August Theron, in March 2012 and July 2015.
