Bethany Correira lived with her parents and her two siblings in Talkeetna, Alaska. She was a smart, beautiful, and self-sufficient girl who knew how to take care of herself.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Anchorage for further studies in 2003. Aspiring to become a doctor, she found an apartment on M street in Bootleggers Cove, an area in downtown Anchorage.
When her apartment manager, Mike Lawson offered her a part-time cleaning job, she was more than thrilled. But just five days after she moved, she went missing. Her mother had come to visit her but she was nowhere to be found.
Despite all the efforts to find her, there was no information about her whereabouts. Later investigators found out, her apartment manager murdered her while he was high on cocaine.
Lawson shot Bethany which he claimed to be an accident and later buried her body a few hundred kilometers away from the crime scene. On May 1st, 2004, Detectives found her body in an abandoned gravel pit. Mile marker 129 on the Parks highway, some forty miles away from Correira’s hometown.
The jury convicted Mike Lawson of Bethany’s murder as well as six other counts, including tampering with evidence and arson. He was sentenced to 99 years which is a maximum sentence allowed for second-degree murder.
