Dr. Jann Adams and Mitchell Brogdon welcomed their third son Malcolm Moses Brogdon on the 11th of December 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia. Mitchell was a lawyer and Jann was the Chairperson of the Morehouse College’s Psychology Department as well as the associate dean of math and science. Their marriage ended in a divorce 11 years later but Malcolm’s love for the game of basketball blossomed. Malcolm Brogdon has two brothers John (elder brother), a lawyer and Gino (elder brother), presently in law school. Due to his family’s strong view on academics, Malcolm was compelled to maintain an above-average performance in class or end the pursuit of his dream career. When he finished from Greater Atlanta Christian School, he did not disappoint.
Malcolm chose the University of Virginia after rejecting offers from colleges in Georgia, Arkansas and Notre Dame. He continued to play basketball in college until but was rendered inactive in his second year due to a foot injury. He was instrumental to his team’s successful runs from 2013 to 2015, two seasons in a row. In his first year alone, he averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds. When he recovered from his injury he averaged 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in each game. He was named ACC player of the year.
He was 36th on the list of the 2016 NBA Draft and thrilled fans in his first game with a sterling performance, recording 8 points and 9 assists in a game which his team eventually lost to the Charlotte Hornets. He later scored 12 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds against the Chicago Bulls. The Bucks won 116-96.
Brandon was called to play in the United States Basketball team and with the team, he participated in the Pan American Games, winning the bronze medal. He won The Rookie of the Year NBA award and was part of the All-Rookie First Team selection in 2017 after he averaged 10.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 75 games.
A torn left quadriceps tendon injury kept Malcolm Brogdon in the cooler for over 7 weeks in the 2018 season. He returned in April and averaged 12.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 48 games. He has missed a total of 30 games.
There is more to the Milwaukee Bucks No. 13 shirts than playing Basketball. A graduate of History from the University of Virginia with a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Public Policy, Brogdon is also involved in a non-profit project where he is helping a South African community develop modern ceramic water filters for clean drinking water. While out of action due to his injury, he utilized his non-playing period to carry out this philanthropic cause with a company named PureMadi. He also partners with Philadelphia Eagles defensive end, Chris Long in another clean water provision cause with Africa Waterboys. Malcolm revealed that he had developed an interest in Africa after visiting Ghana at the age of 9 with his family and saw the abject poverty people live in there. He confessed that this trip changed him and he is glad he is finally able to offer some help.
