No, Mary Bailey is not in jail, but she was in foster care after she murdered her father, Wayne Wyers, under the influence of her mother, Priscilla Wyers.
Both the mother and daughter were charged with murder in 1987. Mary was promptly placed in foster care, and her counsel was promised that if she testified against her mother, the charges against her would be withdrawn.
Mary currently resides in Gastonia, North Carolina, with her attorney husband and runs a medical uniform business, according to PEOPLE. My Mother’s Soldier is a memoir she wrote about her experience.
“Writing the book helped me recover,” Mary explains.
Bailey described her life in the Appalachian Mountains’ foothills, with her mother and her stepfather, as anything from ideal. In fact, she describes it as living in a “house of horrors.”
Mary Bailey shot and murdered her stepfather when she was just 11 years old. Mary’s mother, Priscilla Wyers, informed Mary that she needed her to murder her husband after she had endured days of physical torture at the hands of her husband.
People Magazine Investigates, the latest episode of the Investigation Discovery and Discovery+ series, presents Mary’s tale in stunning detail.
