During the summer of 2018, August announced on social media the loss of his sister-in-law, Chandra. On Christmas Day, she died from cancer after being engaged to his late brother Melvin.
His nieces Chaylin, 14, Amaiya, 13, and Kayden, 11, were then placed under August’s legal guardianship. A prominent role is played by August Alsina’s nieces in the documentary, State of EMERGEncy: The Rise of August Alsina.
In an interview on The Surreal Life, he admitted that the relationship between him and his nieces is “complex.” He also admitted that there are times when he feels like he is failing as a parent because he misses out on important things in their lives while keeping his own in order.
