Janet has now been sober for six years. In a YouTube video that has over one million views, she spoke publicly for the first time about her alcohol problem in 2020.
She speaks openly about her experiences with addiction and the impact it had on people closest to her in a new BBC Northern Ireland documentary. She has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Bipolar II Disorder since becoming sober, and she claims that learning more about these disorders has aided her recovery from addiction.
Janet stated she was astonished by the similarities in the stories of other young women who had suffered addiction, despite the fact that they all had different experiences.
Alcohol-related deaths among young women in Northern Ireland are at an all-time high – and rising faster than anywhere else in the UK.
