In 2019, Bramwell Tovey was initially diagnosed with a rare type of sarcoma.
He momentarily experienced cancer freedom following surgery in 2021, but the VSO reports that the illness reappeared in January.
Bramwell began his musical career with bands from the Salvation Army. Before beginning to conduct, he started playing the tuba and the piano.
His impact on British Columbia’s music, arts, and culture during his tenure as Music Director of the VSO was profound.
Tovey was a catalyst for change and a singular individual of intelligence, humor, compassion, and sincerity.
